For more than 20 years, Ms. GU Luwen has been extensively plowing the field of English education, which not only adds steppingstones to her professional path but also provides her an open mind for pushing the boundary forward. Ms. GU has continued to provide shining points of her accomplishments in an original way, driven by her desire to defy accepted wisdom and her keen eye for every new opportunity. 

Ms. GU’s creativity and desire for a breakthrough are fully utilized in her role as an Associate Professor at Nanjing University when she contributes to the redesign of the college English curriculum. Her dedication is demonstrated by the course, “Reading English for Academic Study: Language and Thought,” for which Ms. GU served as a primary developer and tutor. This project-based language course encourages students to view the world with an open mind and an active curiosity while studying English. Students enrolled in the course would abandon their deeply ingrained English learning style in favor of a more modern one, such as the cooperation-driven approach, in which they are encouraged to cooperate with group members on various projects and share their ideas in public. By zooming out to concepts like discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping, and labeling, the course disengages students from the subjects normally covered in English education and teaches them how to be large picture thinkers. There are four sub-themes within it, including “Stereotyping, Prejudice and Discrimination,” “Jews in WWII,” “The Half Sky of Women,” and “Black or White.”

As the chief academic adviser at Hubei Chase Education & Technology Co., Ltd., Ms. GU uses her talents for ringing changes in all aspects of her work. Since taking on the role of academic leadership, she has facilitated a number of collaborative projects between the institution and foreign education organizations, opening an intriguing door for students to gain access to cutting-edge knowledge and advanced educational philosophy while also taking part in a variety of in-class activities.

Another milestone in her career as an educator is the creation of online platforms for English study. Early in 2021, Ms. GU developed the cross-cultural English practice platform known as “English Situational and Interactive Practice System Base on AI Characters from Different Countries,” which features a variety of real-life scenes from around the world and sheds light on cultural diversity. Students can practice their English while immersing themselves in a variety of settings, such as first greetings with people from different regions and dinners with friends who worship other religions, using AI characters with accents. The inspiration for this innovation came from Ms. GU’s job at the university teaching English to Chinese and “Institute for International Students” students. She believes that in addition to providing professional information, English education also helps students become highly adaptable and sensitive to the diversity of culture, customs, and ideologies. In 2020, a new piece of software called “Online Communication Management Platform for Studying Trendy English Expression with Joy” was released that prioritizes blockbuster and trendy daily expression. It is ideally situated to provide a wealth of fresh daily English in a variety of hip industries, including movies, pop music, fashion, and sports. With the help of this useful tool, students can improve their English proficiency, keep up with the latest trends, and, over time, develop their capacity for English-language thought. These softwares not only quickly gain popularity among students but have also been adopted by a number of educational institutions outside of China.
